changes come

paul and annie have moved to washington. kara and jason have moved next door. adam and jodie have moved into the third floor apartment that overlooks the city. peter started grad school. i'll start russian classes next week.
a combination of the above and the looming autumn clouds over the west hills remind me who i am. walking through dark southeast portland last night, pre-midnight, but alone nonetheless, i heard a night sound- not sure what it was, but it was a noise solely associated with the night. growing up in virginia, i took those sounds for granted, the crickets and owls at night. but in the city, they're replaced by sirens and the low cry of the boats on the river. hearing it last night brought me crashing back to virginia nights (where the fireflies almost looked like explosions on the hills), and back to the slow curves of ohio back roads (accompanied by music of the same vein) - both places where i had felt very secure in who i was. and finally, oregon welcomed me into her night.
the season looks promising.
