1994

just got back from seeing hotel rwanda. i ended up seeing it alone, but that seemed to be the optimum circumstance to see the movie. i found my mouth agape, not believing that humans can act the way we do, and then blatantly ignore the way we do (similar to the way i ignore the people on the street asking for spare change).....and i wondered why God would even love us, and would He please come right now and save us from ourselves because we seem bent on destruction. i cried the whole walk home.

secret

peter heard about this website on npr. and it makes me feel cleansed, ashamed, empathetic, hopeful and sad all at once.

seven swans

i ordered the sufjan stevens cd from the library in december. yesterday it arrived and has accompanied me everywhere since. on morning walks through southeast streets, sitting on a study public transportation seat (kids from benson ride the bus....and i feel like i've been given the gift of seeing into the reality of the portland public school system. each morning i feel like an intruder), in a cafe before work - waiting to meet my coworkers....
everything became surreal and distant this morning, setting it to music. it wasn't just another trek to work - it was a life where everyone i encountered was a teacher of some sort. the separation made me more appreciative. where it takes a warm drink and gentle music and all is well in the world.

big sky country....

montana was wonderfully sparse. we slept in an albertson's parking lot in spokane, for lack of anything better. somewhere between butte & bozeman, our directions flew out the window. a check of the glovebox revealed that we had a map for south carolina and one for mississippi. neither of which were of much help.
california had big trees and expensive gas. see pictures below.
