every autumn
having completed three blissful weeks of unemployment, i now find myself rising at ungodly hours to go to work in the rain again. but it's great. my new office has a window overlooking the park blocks downtown, exposed brick and weathered wood columns, and is strikingly creative. coworkers are trendy with slight tendencies towards drunkenness, but young and funny nonetheless.this afternoon i tried a different bus home....one far less traveled, apparently. by 50th avenue, i had it completely to myself. i looked up abruptly from my reading to discover that i was the only one on board - startled, i asked the driver if i should leave too. he laughed & asked why. well, i've never been the only one on the bus before and didn't know the protocol - if there in fact is any....we cruised the remaining twenty or so blocks in silence, just the two of us. it crossed my mind to ask him to drop me off in front of the house, but thought better of it. he had to work until midnight tonight. in fact, he's still working right now, driving that same route. what must it be like to be a bus driver in the evening....
