let's all be different together

damien jurado wednesday night. doug fir lounge. ruthie, peter, and i were sitting at our corner table, when we were approached by two guys that ruthie knew from the gillian welch show back in october. they sat with us for a while - all of us in our mid 20s, all recent transplants from somewhere else. the conversation was interesting for its predictability more than anything else: you know if you meet someone on the street and start to talk about the rise of fast food, you'll get a passionate anti-response. if you talk about cable tv or chickens or forests or salmon or film or politics, you know what the "correct" opinion is. and, as progressive as portland is, i don't know if i like this mass mentality so much.

today, i had to call a leather manufacturer and ask how many hides to order to cover a chair. i hate doing that, and i'm not really animal-rights anything, so i can only imagine how your hardcore animal-rights activists must feel. did this cow have to die in order for me to have leather on my couch? why can't their skin grow back like starfish? i don't like thinking that leather is made up of actual hides. when i called, the girl said that the cows for the shaker-ochre color have been running a little smaller than the cows for the coffee bean color, so i'll need to order an extra hide. THESE ARE ACTUAL LIVING CREATURES, "they've been running small". t-shirts run small. cattle do not. that's about as far as my soapbox goes today.

hey
at the equator the earth moves at 1000 miles per hour
around these parts its about 700 mph, but then again velocity is all relative to the observer...The Earth is also moving around the Sun at about 67,000 miles per hour...that's over 1,000 miles per second. Where am I?
